Rukhsar: A Documentary

Synopsis:
A documentary on the life of a young girl Rukhsar, who runs her family's business of making traditional oxidized jewellery in the old city of Ahmedabad. The film talks about Rukhsar's life, her aspirations and her experiences in the social, communal and political context of the city.

The film tries to capture Rukhsar's personality: her bubbly, optimistic and carefree nature despite her contrasting reality of hard-work and monetary responsibility. It tries to show her family's dynamics, the women members, and their share of work in the household.
Rukhsar's  business is particularly lucrative at the onset of Navratri, as her shop sells the oxidized ornaments worn with the Garba dance attire.
What made me follow her story was the fact that while the right wing groups demanded restriction of non-Hindus on entering the Garba grounds, there were multiple non-Hindu lives that formed the backbone of the festival. Through occupation based contributions such as jewellery makers, chaniya choli sellers, folk singers and choreographers, different religious communities had equal share in making the festivities a success.
